Good Morning Universe! A giant jet spanning continuously for over 570,000 light years is seen blasting out of the galaxy Pictor A. This composite image shows this jet in X-rays (blue) and radio waves (red). In addition to the main jet, there is evidence for a jet moving in the opposite direction. Chandra observations at various times over a 15-year period provide new details of this impressive system. #universe #astrophysics #astronomy #NASA #starstuff #galaxy #Chandra #knowledgeispower #nowyouknow #science #light #blackhole #darkmatter 1434128932731176893_561112395

Dusty Environs of Eta Carinae
.
"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, bewith you all. Amen."
.
Eta Car is a massive star, but it's not as bright as it used to be. Now only easily visible in binoculars or a small telescope, Eta Carinae has a history of spectacular flaring and fading behavior. In fact, in April of 1843 Eta Car briefly became second only to Sirius as the brightest star in planet Earth's night sky, even though at a distance of about 7,500 light-years, it is about 800 times farther away. Surrounded by a complex and evolving nebula, Eta Carinae is seen near the center of this false-color infrared image, constructed using data from the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX). The MSX satellite mapped the galactic plane in 1996. In the picture, wispy, convoluted filaments are clouds of dust glowing at infrared wavelengths. Astronomers hypothesize that Eta Car itself will explode as a supernova in the next million years or so. Massive Eta Car has even been considered a candidate for a hypernova explosion and the potential source of a future gamma-ray burst.

Discover astrophysicsman's Instagram After 20 years, NASA had announced that they have completed the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). 20 years ago, NASA began constructing its successor to Hubble. The JWST will be larger than Hubble. It will be able to capture seven times as much light as Hubble using its 21-foot gold coated mirror. The JWST cost around $8.8 billion. That large price tag, however, will definitely be worth it. The telescope will be capable of observing parts of the universe that even Hubble was unable to view. The JWST will be capable of viewing the universe as it was 13 billion years ago and will be capable of observing the earliest galaxies. It will also be able to view light in the infrared, allowing it to peer deep into regions of star formation. The JWST will also be able to detect habitable planets around other stars, and it may even be capable of directly imaging planets around other stars.

The JWST is scheduled to launch in 2018. It will be launched in an Ariana 5 rocket. The telescope is actually too large to fit inside of the craft, and thus it must be folded to fit inside. The JWST will orbit at a distance of about a million miles in order for its infrared technology to work. At this distance, repairs will be impossible to accomplish. Everything must work perfectly from the start. The telescope must unfold correctly and maintain a temperature of around -220°C. If anything goes wrong, this entire $8.8 billion program could be for nothing. NASA will continue to test the telescope's equipment through tests that simulate launch and the cold temperatures. It's an exciting time to be alive.
