I was walking down this street in #brooklynin the evening and it suddenly hit me that for the first time, I was walking on a street in a country where #donaldtrumpis president, that the sky above me stretched over a nation ruled by neo-Nazis and quasi-fascists, that it's now all real, no longer a concept but in fact a living reality, infusing the concrete, hanging in the clouds. I was alive in Trump's America. I remember having this same phenomenological moment eight years ago, with the opposite feeling, when we elected the first Black president, when progress seemed forever secured, when there was nothing but promise.
This afternoon, I'm going to be fighting. The next four years, I'm going to be fighting. I will not stop. I will not let the elites and the hateful and the ideologues reverse all the progress we've made and turn this country into a haven for ignorance and harm. No, I'm not going to throw a Molotov cocktail or rush a cop or jump a Trump supporter. But I am going to fight. And if that makes us enemies, then you're my enemy. If my commitment to a world that we can all share is something that turns your stomach, then we are not two people who can get along. I'm tired of hearing people demand inaction in the name of "tolerance" when they don't give a single fuck what happens to vast swaths of human beings under this government's jurisdiction. My tolerance demands confronting intolerance. So you go in your corner and I'll go in mine. This is a battle over history. Over humanity. I will not let you win. ---
