NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory came across an oddity that the spacecraft has rarely observed before: a dark filament encircling an active region (Oct. 29-31, 2017). Solar filaments are clouds of charged particles that float above the sun, tethered to it by magnetic forces. They are usually elongated and uneven strands. Only a handful of times before have we seen one shaped like a circle. The black area to the left of the brighter active region is a coronal hole, a magnetically open region of the sun. While it may have no major scientific value, it is noteworthy because of its rarity. The still was taken in a wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light.

A large coronal hole stands out as the most obvious feature on the sun this week (Oct. 12-13, 2017). The dark structure, shaped kind of like the Pi symbol, spreads across much of the top of the sun. Though one cannot tell from this video clip in false-color extreme ultraviolet light, it is spewing high-speed solar wind particles into space and has been doing this all week. It is likely that these charged particles have been interacting with Earth's atmosphere and generating many aurora displays in regions near the poles the past several days.

They are from the European Space Agency's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, and are images of the sun from the perspective of Earth's orbit on Thursday, September 7, 2017. They depict sunspots on the surface of the sun.

The image on the top right shows the less than $50 worth of basic equipment--- including a (used) ground-based telescope, a cardboard box, and a chair--- that i used to capture images of the sun on the same day, from the perspective of my culdesac.

The image on the bottom right is one of those images I captured with my camera phone. It features the same sunspots on the sun's surface.

You may have heard about a recent solar flare (or "coronal mass ejection" if you will) from our sun that blasted our sector of the solar system this week.

This x-class event is among the strongest recorded since 2008, and potentially caused (or will cause) aurorae to be observable in the northern states of the lower 48.

Being a major nerd, i decided to try to capture some images of the coronal holes or "sunspots" on the surface of the sun. I used my old refracting telescope to safely project the sun's image into a shadowbox, then photographed the projection.

You can see a video of the same sunspots, as well as one of my setup in my next posts.

There's a great big sky full of beauty and wonder,  that's always overhead. Un agujero coronal sustancial se girar en una posición en la que se enfrenta a la tierra (ago. 9-11, 2017 los agujeros coronal son áreas de campo magnético abierto que arrojan partículas cargadas como viento solar que se extiende al espacio. Si ese viento solar interactúa con nuestra propia magnetosfera puede generar aurora. En esta vista del sol en la luz ultravioleta extrema, el agujero coronal aparece como el tramo oscuro cerca del centro del sol. Fue la característica más distintiva del sol durante la semana pasada.

Because we will be passing through wind composed of charged solar particles, there are risks for occasional G1-class Geomagnetic storms. This means #Aurora will be more visible at high latitudes, minor fluctuations to power grids may occur, and some migratory animals may get turned around for a short period of time.
