Discover astroamberrose's Instagram As I sip my morning coffee☕ and read upon new space findings, I came across an article from @natgeo about a newly discovered asteroid!
This artist’s impression shows the first interstellar asteroid: `Oumuamua, which traveled through space for millions of years before its chance encounter with us. It seems to be a dark red, elongated metallic or rocky object about a quarter mile long and is unlike anything normally found in the solar system! ‘Oumuamua is Hawaiian for “a messenger from afar arriving first,” the object is the first known lump of rock and ice❄ from another star system, which gives astronomers a chance to glimpse at scrap left over from an alien planet’s formation. The object is at least 10 times longer than it is wide, resembling a giant cosmic pencil tumbling through the void.
"This has been crazy-cool. For the asteroid community, this is as big as the gravitational-wave announcement,” NASA astronomer Joseph Masiero said when the object was discovered, referencing the recent detections of ripples in space-time that have been amazing astrophysicists. @natgeo @nasa
I also read that a team is being put together to observe the asteroid with Hubble, since it's now to far away for ground based observatories. I can't wait to hear about the new discoveries!

Anyone else read up on this new asteroid? 1653036419223683281_4469125882

Discover instakarmon's Instagram Born on this day in 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri, astronomer Edwin Hubble confirmed that the Milky Way is just one of many galaxies and showed that galaxies' redshifts increase with distance. Hubble studied at the University of Chicago and Oxford. Following his father's wishes, he trained to become a lawyer, When his father died, Hubble followed his own interests and trained to become an astronomer. He earned a PhD in astronomy at Chicago in 1917 and served briefly in the US Army before joining the staff at Mount Wilson observatory in California. There, using a relationship discovered by astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt for determining the distance to certain variable stars, he found that Andromeda is another galaxy, not a star cluster within the Milky Way. Then in the late 1920s, Hubble discovered that galaxies' recessional velocity increases roughly in proportion to their distance from Earth. Hubble's discovery supported the notion of an expanding universe, which Georges Lemaître had proposed based on Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity. (Though it should be noted that Hubble was skeptical of that interpretation.) Hubble's famous paper was published in 1929. He died in 1953. Thirty-seven years later, the space telescope that bears his name was launched with the task of, among other things, observing distant galaxies and helping to measure the universe's expansion rate. “A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.”
.
Sculpted by stellar winds and radiation, a magnificent interstellar dust cloud by chance has assumed this recognizable shape. Fittingly named the Horsehead Nebula, it is some 1,500 light-years distant, embedded in the vast Orion cloud complex. About five light-years "tall", the dark cloud is cataloged as Barnard 33 and is visible only because its obscuring dust is silhouetted against the glowing red emission nebula IC 434. Stars are forming within the dark cloud. Contrasting blue reflection nebula NGC 2023, surrounding a hot, young star, is at the lower left. The gorgeous color image combines both narrowband and broadband images recorded using three different telescopes.

NGC 7822: Stars and Dust Pillars in infrared
.
“What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?”
.
Young stars themselves are clearing out their nursery in NGC 7822. Within the nebula, bright edges and complex dust sculptures dominate this detailed skyscape taken in infrared light by NASA's Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite. NGC 7822 lies at the edge of a giant molecular cloud toward the northern constellation Cepheus, a glowing star forming region that lies about 3,000 light-years away. The atomic emission of light by the nebula's gas is powered by energetic radiation from the hot stars, whose powerful winds and light also sculpt and erode the denser pillar shapes. Stars could still be forming inside the pillars by gravitational collapse, but as the pillars are eroded away, any forming stars will ultimately be cut off from their reservoir of star stuff. This field spans around 40 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 7822.

Discover thehubblescope's Instagram Ghost of Cepheus Flare
.
“And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.”
.
Spooky shapes seem to haunt this starry expanse, drifting through the night in the royal constellation Cepheus. Of course, the shapes are cosmic dust clouds faintly visible in dimly reflected starlight. Far from your own neighborhood on planet Earth, they lurk at the edge of the Cepheus Flare molecular cloud complex some 1,200 light-years away. Over 2 light-years across the ghostly nebula known as vdB 141 or Sh2-136 is near the center of the field. The core of the dark cloud on the right is collapsing and is likely a binary star system in the early stages of formation.
