I’m a week late for #WorldMentalHealthDay but alas, here we are. My mental health for the past month or so has been on the fritz & a complete  of emotions. A lot of things not being as they seem, other things being exactly as they seem, letting go, going back, anxiety, crippling self-doubt, excitement, fear, freedom, hurt, unease, uncertainty, possibility etc. A lot of a lot. A lot of “what have I done?”

The thing is…we ALL have mental health. Each & every one of us. Whether you end up with actual mental health issues or not (hello depression & anxiety), it’s up to us to take care of ourselves. Mental health is just as important as physical health. If not, more because if you have great physical health, but a shit thought process, you are not all that healthy. In fact, your mental health can affect your physical health. •

I’ve been experiencing that first hand this past month. I’ve had crippling anxiety where I would have cold sweats, blurry vision, nausea, light-headedness, difficulty breathing, and couldn’t focus. That was a physical sign that something.wasn’t.right. It was my body saying, “hey something is not okay here”. So I’ve been trying to listen to my body, and going with my gut. Eliminating things & situations that were taking a toll on me. It’s been hard, but it’s also possibly been leading me in the right direction. I’ve had to do some major self-care to take care of myself, and make sure I don’t go down a dark path that I know I can easily slip in to. I’m listening to my intuition even though sometimes that seems iffy. •

Your mind + body work together. Take care of them both. And remember it’s okay not to be okay.

It never will be. I don't even think you realise how amazing you are and how much people need you. How many things you will experience and people you will meet. I don't give a fuck whats going on in your life because it should never ever ever result to dying because you are needed in this world. You think all those tiny cells and atoms and neurons came together for nothing. You think your heart pumps blood around your body to be a waste of space. You think your brain sends nerve signles down your body for no reason. You think your family would do anything for you for no reason. You have a reason and without your unique personality and thoughts ideas that could never be replicated again the world would be destroyed for anyone who knew you. Their lives stained with your blood. Your friends need you, they want you, they care about you. Your parents would fucking loose it and no matter how long time passes from your death they will never be the same. How alone would your siblings be and who could they argue with and then make up seconds after because they can't help but resist talking to you. How would they cope not being able to talk to you forever. Don't pass your pain onto those who love you. You might not realise it now but everyone cares. And guess what if they don't then I care. You are needed so stay. Discover lauramayatkins's Instagram I've taken a bit of time off social media recently as you may have noticed. Now this wasn't a decision I made overnight or for any particular reason. However, I would often find myself glued to my phone, comparing myself to other bloggers who clearly lead different lives to myself. Along with this my lifestyle started to become rather unhealthy (ironically) as I became obsessed with my fitness goals, rarely making the time for anything else. We have all been there. I quite literally burnt myself out; working ridiculous hours, training five times a week whilst trying to maintain a social life and finding the time to blog. This meant some time away from the gym and my blog focusing on the things that really matter, like loved ones and my health. The scary thing is it's so easy to lose track of who you are and where you're heading when there's so many people on social media who seem to lead these 'perfect' lives powered by materialism (everything I despised when I was travelling). My blog has always been a platform for expressing my thoughts and feelings and I hope to carry this on until it no longer serves a purpose. However it's good to have a break away from your screens sometimes, especially when your spend your working week glued to one too! Unfortunately to be a successful blogger social media is something you need to have a presence on. Yet for someone who suffers with anxiety, this is never going to be easy... I had such a lovely day celebrating my dads 70th last weekend which reiterated how important it is to cherish time with your loved ones. This is one thing I truly missed when I was travelling. Not being able to ask my mum a question whilst she was doing the ironing downstairs or even give my dad a hug. I've longed for happiness for so long and I finally feel content with where I'm at in my life (thanks bae). I may not have my dream job yet or live in the most beautiful place in the world but I have a lot to be thankful for right now.

But something that has frustrated me so much always, particularly on #WorldMentalHealthDay, is the portrayal of mental illness as some beautiful disaster that can be overcome. 
Depression is not #beautiful. Depression is #personal and #unique to everyone. And for many depression is not #overcome but #managed and #treated every day. It is not a #flaw to be removed. 
It’s easy to have compassion once a year on social media for a depression that fits neatly into our understanding of what it “should be”.
But it’s far more difficult and important to show #empathy every day and #understand the vast and wide ranging ways depression affects others we meet and judge on a daily basis.
