Photo by @GerdLudwig. On the eve of Russian Orthodox Epiphany, January 19th (as the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian Calendar) hundreds of thousands of Russians prepare to do what they do on Epiphany every year. They gather – like here in Moscow - to take a dip in the icy priest-blessed waters. This is believed to cleanse the soul of sins and protect the faithful from evil. According to Orthodox Christian tradition, this January feast day celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. In many places, the first faithful arrive before sunrise and the ceremony continues throughout the day and well into the night. You can find more photographs from Russian Epiphany events at @gerdludwig and on my website: http://www.gerdludwig.com/?p=2114 @thephotosociety @natgeocreative @theimagereview #russianepiphany #russianorthodox #celebration #religion #tradition #iceswimming

Photo by @haarbergphoto (Orsolya Haarberg) Siberian spruce has a slender crown which is an adaptation to protect it from the heavy snowfall it withstands. During the summer, the individual trees blend together into infinite green forests amidst the rolling landscape of Swedish Laponia. In early winter, however, the candle-like crown of the trees becomes distinct against the white snow covering the ground. The low winter Sun casts a beautiful warm light on the highest tree tops while the white snow develops a blue tone on the lower tree crowns and on the shaded forest floor. #muddusNational Park, #laponiaWorld Heritage Site, #lapland #sweden@thephotosociety @natgeocreative

photo by @daviddoubilet A small but mighty Pygmy goby defends its chosen shelter, a discarded glass bottle resting in the silty bottom of Anilao, Philippines. The sloping sea beds near Anilao are a barren empty seascape with little cover for marine creatures trying to escape predation. Any discarded object or natural debris becomes priceless real estate. Nearly 102 million people live in this island nation defined by the sea. The Philippines are a cornerstone of the Coral Triangle, the richest marine diversity on the planet, geographically defined by Phillippines,Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. Photo by @stephenwilkes: A small moment of a much larger image. I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to create a Day to Night of President Obama's 2012 Inauguration. I witnessed a sea of waving flags, cheers of proud constituents, and the pride of the nation --all illuminated by a bright and colorful sunrise--I am so honored to have been part of such a momentus day in history. #inauguration #presidentobama #washingtondc #america #brycewolkowitzgallery #peterfettermangallery #monroegallery #daytonight #stephenwilkes

Video by @salvarezphoto (Stephen Alvarez) In slow motion they are almost graceful! Armadillos are a recent addition to life here on the Cumberland Plateau. They first appeared about 4 years ago and now seeing them out is fairly common. I was out last week enjoying a bike ride in the temperate weather when I saw this one by the side of the trail and followed it through the woods. #slowmotion #armadillo

Photograph by @simonnorfolkstudio The black volcanic sand of Khalaktyrsky Beach in the Kamchatka peninsular, Russian Far East, with Cape Nalychevo on the horizon. The iron, vanadium and titanium-rich sand lies 20m (65ft) deep and the beach stretches for 30km (19miles). Towards the end of the Second World War Kamchatka and its beaches served as a launch site for the invasion of the Kuril Islands and after the war the Soviet military designated the area a military zone: it remained closed to Soviet citizens until 1989 and to foreigners until 1990. Photo by @gabrielegalimbertiphoto | Mumbai, India. A view of Sant Dnyaneshwar Nagar and Valmiki Nagar, two of the slums in the neighborhood of East Bandra, seen from the 11th floor of a constructions site which will soon become luxury apartments and offices. Mumbai is referred to by many as the global slum capital. Mumbai was home of around 13 million residents in 2016, about half of them lived in slums. However, in the past few year the city has been growing and developing really fast. #mumbai #india #slum #slums #city #bombai

Photo by @adamfergusonphoto After daytime temperatures reached 107.6 °F a summer storm forms over an opal field in Coober Pedy, South Australia. Coober Pedy in remote Australia supplies most of the worlds precious opals. ‘Coober’ as the locals call it, is a multicultural town that has attracted independent prospectors digging for opal since the early 1900’s. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative @adamfergusonphoto #australia #australianmade #cooberpedy #ferguson

Image by @beverlyjoubert. A young lion drinks deeply after a successful hunt on an exceptionally hot day in the Selinda Reserve in Botswana. He is one of 6 cubs - all of whom have been successfully raised to this age; a most unusual occurrence. There was a day in their young lives when we weren't sure that they would all make it. They were being guided by their two mothers across a deep channel as small cubs, when two panicked and turned back. The lionesses swam between their cubs for the rest of the day, trying to coax the scared two into swimming back to the others. Scared of crocodiles and hippos, they refused and eventually spent a long and undoubtedly nervous night on their own. At first light the following morning, the lionesses appeared again and this time the cubs had little hesitation in hanging on and swimming the channel to join their siblings. Now this young male is at an age when he is about to head off on his own and try his luck as an adult. With the strong lessons he would have learned from those determined lionesses, his chances may possibly be better than others of the same age. #bigcats #selindapride #lions #thisismytrophy

Photo by @BrianSkerry The February 2017issue of National Geographic Magazine with a cover story about saving our oceans. The story’s premise is to use the centennial anniversary of the US National Parks (2016) as an opportunity to look towards protecting special places in America’s oceans. Scientists have stated that in order to have a healthy ocean and a healthy planet, at least 40% of Earth’s oceans should be protected from damaging practices such as over fishing and mining. Currently only about 3% of the ocean is protected. Every other breath that humans take comes from the sea, more than 50% of the oxygen needed for life is generated by the ocean. The creation of marine reserves has also been proven to help protect against the damaging effects of climate change. Conserving precious marine habitats then, is necessary for our own healthy future. With only about 3% of oceans currently protected, we have a long way to go. To learn more about how to protect ocean wildlife and establish blue parks tune-in to #seaofhopeon Sun. Jan 15 at 8/7c on @natgeochannel and check out my story #seaofchangein the February issue of National Geographic Magazine (@natgeo) – available online starting Jan 9. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #climatechange #conservation #nationalparks

Photograph by @paulnicklen // Almost 90 percent of an iceberg (or “ice mountain”) is underwater. The foot or underwater portion of this iceberg could be at well over 200 feet deep. Icebergs are stunning to look at but they are a reminder that glaciers are receding and ice shelves in Antarctica are breaking up faster than we ever thought possible. If all of Antarctica and Greenland melted, global sea level could rise by as much as 230 feet, covering all of the major coastal cities in the world. Whether you believe climate change is caused by humans or not, do you think it is worth erring on the side of caution and reducing our carbon footprint? #followmeon @paulnicklen to see what these icebergs look like underwater. #antarctica #sealevelrising #iceberg #ice #climatechangeisreal #nature #naturelovers #photooftheday@thephotosociety @natgeopristineseas
