در روز چهارشنبه به تاریخ شانزدهم می سال دوهزار و هفده این دو ماهواره کوچکِ در اندازه جعبه کفش،بر مدار زمین خواهند چرخید با مشاهده ی لایه ی بالایی جو زمین و اشعه بین ستاره ای که از زمان انفجار بزرگ باقی مانده است.این هفته بیش از یک دوجین تاسواره از آزمایشگاه فضایی کیبو به سمت مدار زمین به بیرون پرتاب شدند تا به مطالعه زمین و پدیده های فضایی برای یک تا دوسال آینده بپردازند.

اطلاعاتی خارج از پست اصلی ناسا در رابطه با آزمایشگاه کیبو : قطعه اصلي كيبو سيلندري به طول حدود ( ۱۱متر) و قطري حدود ( ۴/۶متر) يعني تقريبا به اندازه يك دستگاه اتوبوس است و حدود ( ۱۴هزار و ۵۲۰كيلوگرم) وزن دارد.درون اين سيلندر فضايي براي بیست و سه قفسه به اندازه يخچال وجود دارد كه ده تای آنها به آزمايش‌هاي علمي اختصاص داده شده است.كل آزمايشگاه آنقدر بزرگ است كه براي انتقال و مونتاژ آن نيازمند سه ماموريت شاتل است. علاوه بر اين آزمايشگاه اصلي متراكم ، كيبو فضاي ذخيره مخصوصي نيز دارد كه ماه مارس به ايستگاه فضايي برده شد. كيبو يك سكوي ورودي نيز دارد كه سال آينده به مدار زمين برده خواهد شد. اين سكو به بازوهاي روباتيكي مجهز خواهد بود كه مي‌توانند به انجام آزمايشها در خلاء بپردازند. قرار است در اين آزمايشگاه فضايي در زمينه علوم مواد، فيزيك مايعات و پزشكي زيستي آزمايشهايي انجام گيرد. اما كيبو علاوه بر اين كه كارگاهي براي انجام تحقيقات علمي است، ميزبان فعاليت‌هاي فرهنگي هنري نيز خواهد بود. ژاپن يك سيستم تلويزيوني با وضوح بالا در خارج اين مجموعه كار خواهد گذاشت كه بیست و چهار ساعته تصاويري از كره زمين به ايستگاه زميني ارسال كند. ژاپن مدت بیست سال حدود سه میلیارد دلار براي ساخت اين مجموعه هزينه كرده است.بخش اصلي اين آزمايشگاه حدود يك ميليارد دلار مي‌ارزد. The tiny shoebox-sized satellites will orbit Earth observing the Earth’s upper atmosphere and interstellar radiation left over from the Big Bang.
