Photo @coryrichards | Eventually, when there is nothing left to do, when the wind promises to die, when the temperature looks to raise... then, you move up. We are on our final summit push on Everest now. The season will be closed out by the monsoon in the coming weeks. The next 48 hours will see some succeed, and others fail. A year of preparation will coalesce into a singular moment... or it won't. At the end off the day, it won't matter much who climbs the mountain and who doesn't. What will matter, at least to me, are these moments. Moments when the world appears new again and opens up in unimaginable ways... when it's quiet and whole. To me, climbing is as simple as that. Wishing good luck to all those on the mountain. Follow the final hours of our No O's attempt on Snap at #everestnofilterand at @adrianballinger and @coryrichards

Photograph by @thomaspeschak During April/May 2017 I spent almost a month on remote Marion Island on assignment for @natgeo magazine. This South African Sub-Antarctic outpost is a true global seabird hotspot, with 28 species breeding there. These Southern rockhoppers are one of four different penguins that nest on Marion Island. Photograph shot on expedition with the South African Antarctic Program and the SA Department of Environmental Affairs. #southafrica #seabird #marionisland #penguinFollow #natgeophotographer @thomaspeschak for more photographs of penguins.

Video by @joelsartore | A corn snake at @lincolnchildrenszoo in Nebraska. These snakes can be found in eastern and southeastern parts of the United States. They hunt small prey like mice, amphibians and small reptiles that they kill through constriction. They are very adaptable and make their homes in a variety of habitats such as overgrown fields, forest edges and even abandoned buildings. Photo by @martinschoeller Martin: “How are you doing tonight?” Teddy: “I’m fine. I’m here, that’s half the battle, right?” M: “I like your attitude.” T: “Hopefully things will work out. I’ve got a job interview on Monday.” M: “What kind of job?” T: “For the city, maintenance, the county actually.” M: “I hope it works out. Many jobs pay so little that it’s even hard to afford an apartment.” T: “Right, yeah, that’s the problem, the apartments out here are insane, even if you move to the bad areas, you’re still looking at twelve hundred... you know. Depends how big your family is." M: "Where is your family?” T: “My wife works part-time, barely part time. But that money goes to babysitting and things for the kids.” M: “You don’t live with your family?” T: “She’s staying with a coworker and they’re tight. Yeah, it’s crazy the way things are. I’ll just stay here on the street." M: “How old are your kids?” T: “Nine, six and five. The five-year-old will be six on the 24th, Saturday, and the six-year-old will be seven on October the second. So for about a week they’re the same age." M: “So you see them all the time?” T: “Yeah, yeah. Oh yeah. Every day. I was there earlier today. My situation is different, I just need a job. A lot of people out here may have some drug problems or medical problems. That’s not who I am.” M: “That’s what I want to show with this project, everybody on the street is different." T: “Yeah, I just need a job. Yeah that’s my only thing. One job and a paycheck.” M: “I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you.” . . . @kitracahana // Nunavut has the highest suicide rate of any province or territory in Canada.  In the town of Arviat, young people have found salvation in dancing. Their annual competitions have become legendary – and a way to heal emotional wounds. . . 1. Ian John Alikaswa tells his half brother Peter Aliktiluk to 'have no doubts, and use all our abilities' before the annual Sila Rainbow dance competition. . . 2. Shelton Nipisar (left) and his dance partner Malachi Poungalak practice a dance routine before the annual dance competition. “I inispire a lot of youth, especially children. They’re like, ‘Oh it’s Shelton, oh look it’s Malachi.’” Shelton says. "So when they do that, I feel like I want to dance more and inspire them. I want to tell the kids that if you’re feeling suicidal, just talk to someone. If you don’t talk about it, that feeling will grow inside you like a flower, and it will become worse. So just talk to someone you know you trust.” . . 3. Andy Thomas Evaloakjuk searches the cemetery for the graves of those he has lost, December 2016. “Talk to someone you know who’s older, your friend, your older friend, teacher, relative, even a stranger,” Andy says. “A stranger might even feel the same way. But they need help too. Once they start talking, they’ll support each other. Once they support each other, all of us, we can stop suicide.” . . 4. Inuit young and old gather in the community hall every week to dance in Arviat, Nunavut. . . @edouphoto and I have a new short documentary “Dancing Towards the Light” set in the town of Arviat, Nunavut. Visit @kitracahana to view other photos and videos from the project and to find a link to the full documentary available for free online on the CBC.

Photo by @woods_galimberti and @gabrielegalimbertiphoto - Employees at Vicarious, an artificial intelligence company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Vicarious is developing machine learning software based on the computational principles of the human brain. Known as the Recursive Cortical Network (RCN), it is a visual perception system that interprets the contents of photographs and videos in a manner similar to humans. For example Vicarious has been able to produce software that enables machines to read Captcha, a test supposed to tell computers from humans. Vicarious has received funding from some of the major players in the Silicon Valley such as Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Vinod Khosla, Ashton Kutcher and Jeff Bezos. In the photo Wenzhao Lian is working with a Baxter robot teaching it how to recognize different forms and objects. #ai #artificialintelligence #genius #captcha #vicarious #siliconvalley #bayarea #sanfrancisco #robot@instituteartist

Photograph by @paulnicklen // During a blizzard on Svalbard, Norway a mother polar bear plays with her young 4 month old cub while a fulmar flies overhead. We spent many hours with this female bear and her two cubs. She was patient, nurturing and a great teacher. She was also a great hunter as we watched her casually catch two ringed seals on the open sea ice. With their bellies full of seal meat, they had time to wrestle and play Queen of the castle. #followmeon @paulnicklen to see her second cub and witness this tender and beautiful interaction captured on video. In addition to charting the river's full length and topography, the @intotheokavango expedition team collects samples of flora and fauna in order to create a comprehensive biodiversity assessment. The Cubango River is a critical tributary for the #okavangoDelta, a pristine wilderness in #botswanaand home to bountiful biodiversity. Southport Pier, Merseyside, UK by @simoncroberts from the series #Pierdom Southport Pier is a Grade II listed building in Southport. First opened in 1860, it spans a length of 1,108 metres and is the second longest in Great Britain after Southend Pier. It has had several setbacks in its history, suffering from colissions, gales, and fire. The British pleasure pier follows the story of Britain’s relationship to the seaside, from the early links with the Romantics, to the engineering feats and technical advancement of the Industrial Revolution. They bear witness to the growth of the coast as a pleasure destination for a monied elite, as well as the working class’ enthusiasm for the seaside brought on by the development of the railways and the bank holiday ruling. Britain’s piers trace our changing economic fortunes too, from post-war boom to economic downturn, and now a slow re-awakening of our appreciation of these cultural and historic landmarks. Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - The Monte Corona (Crown Mountain) lava tube system on the Canary island of Lanzarote must rank as one of the world’s classic lava tubes. This lava tube was formed during the eruptions of Monte Corona volcano some 3,000 - 4,500 years ago. Pictured here, an explorer walks by one of the lava tubes classic features running along the lefthand side of the tunnel. Known as a bench, it's effectively a 'tide-mark' left when the lava surface was slightly higher. Where the lava touched the wall it cooled and formed a semi-solid lining that can be anything from an inch to a foot or more thick. When the level dropped, the solidified lining remained to form a bench.
